  • DBAccess subclasses for Oracle support are now included in the release.

Bug fixes:

  • fixed minor bugs in EmailToDiscussion module
  • changed 'trim' utility to match over newlines
  • fixed minor bug in the name parsing code used for upgrading from older Metadot versions

Release notes for version 5.6b1, 24 April 2003. This is a beta release.

New features:

  • The Group / User cache can now be loaded incrementally. This can improve performance for sites with more than ~1000 users. This option is off by default, and is set in the metadot.conf file via the incremental_group_cache attribute. See metadot.conf for an example.
  • Users can optionally modify their own discussion messages. This option is controlled via the Admin/Site Manager's Manage->Config interface.
  • Discussion moderators can receive email notifications. This option is controlled via the Admin/Site Manager's Manage->Config interface.
  • SendMail function can be suppressed, for debugging purposes. This option is controlled via the suppress_emails attribute in metadot.conf. See metadot.conf for an example.
  • Email notifications of channel content have improved layout.
  • Users can now reply to individual messages in a Daily or Weekly Digest.
  • DBAccess SQL debugging can now be controlled via the sql_logfile attribute in metadot.conf.
  • SQL debugging measures query times.
  • Group managers may now optionally manage/register new users into their groups. This is controlled via the Manage->Config->Registration Params interface. (Note: feature is experimental).

Bug fixes:

  • More graceful handling of non-existent debug log file.
  • Fixed bugs related to suppressing use of the 'my page' feature.
  • Fixed syntax problem in generating gizmotag comment lines, which could cause problems with some browsers.
  • Fixed bug in rendering upgraded site pages using "Style 3".
  • Addressed some omissions in the installation documentation.

Changes in v. 5.5.2.1

  • Fixed a bug that enabled a 'site manager' to give themselves admin privileges by exploiting an obscure cgi query.
  • Fixed a bug in LDAP registration, where under some circumstances the LDAP user's default 'my page' would not be built correctly.
  • It is now possible to use gizmotags with the WYSIWYG HTML editor used for Page description fields. (This editor is currently usable only with Windows IE browsers). The HTML editor removes gizmotags of this syntax: , as non-valid HTML. To circumvent this problem, it is now possible to use square brackets in addition to angle brackets to specify gizmotags.

Release not for Metadot Portal Server v.5.5 release

The Open-source Metadot Portal Server serves as the foundation of a robust commercial product, Smartsite. The Portal Server Version 5.5 provides numerous new features and usability enhancements, and a number of bug fixes.

Major functionality enhancements:

  • Themes: A new Page Themes mode allows the site admin a means to easily set and change the logo and color scheme consistently site-wide, without needing to modify a collection of color settings, or to change a set of site templates. The Themes mode uses a set of fixed layout templates, which the admin does not have to modify; thus, it supports a very simple interface to control the site look.

  • "Public space" file uploads: Support for upload of images to a server-accessible (non-access-controlled) public image area. Public image upload is supported for Category and Themes images, as well as for Item and Image Item gizmos. Admins can also use the Themes image upload feature to develop a 'library' of images.

  • Greatly increased flexibility in arranging page content: Gizmos are no longer required to be sorted by type within a page's center panel, so that content from all gizmo types may be placed on a page with much greater flexibility.

  • Integration of HTML editor for creating page descriptions, for Windows IE users, from interactivetools.com.

  • User-Friendly URLs: It is now possible to reach specific pages in the portal by constructing URLs (addresses) that describe the page to go to by giving info about the page in terms of a page's name (title) information. Because they identify a page on the site by name rather than by page ID, these URLs may look more "friendly". As an example, to reach a sub-page named 'presentations' under a page named 'marketing', a user can enter the URL: www.yoursite.com/metadot/index.pl/marketing/presentations .

  • Group Management functionality: The owner of a Group may designate one or more members of the group to be managers of the group. The group managers may add and remove members from a group.

  • Nested Groups functionality: It is now possible to add subgroups as members of groups. For example, one large group may be defined in terms of several smaller user groups.

  • Shortcuts: "Symbolic links" can be created to objects, and the links pasted elsewhere on the site. This allows the objects, such as sub-pages or items, to appear to be placed in more than one location on the site.

  • Propagation of content permissions: It is now possible to apply permissions propagation down a content object (sub)tree. Permissions propagation provides the ability to map a set of object permissions to the object's children. This can now be accomplished in two different and complementary ways: dynamic permissions inheritance, and static permissions propagation.

  • Enhanced registration page: The user registration form now collects more optional information about users. In addition, the admin's "Manage Users" interface now allows the user table to be sorted on last name as well as first and nickname.

  • Multiple levels of site administration: There are now two levels of admin functionality: "Site Managers", and the site Admin. The site managers can perform only a subset of the operations allowed to the site Admin.

  • Administrative editing of all groups: The admin or site manager may now edit groups belonging to site users (previously, an admin could only edit their own groups, not all groups).

  • Control of "personal page" use: The admin or site manager now has the ability to toggle whether or not a 'my website' area is made for new users when their accounts are created. If not, the 'my website' link is not shown at the top of the page. If 'my website' creation is originally off and then is turned back on, website areas will be generated for existing users on demand.

  • Event Logger: This is an admin tool which logs site activity and user actions, and then allows an admin to browse info about the http requests to the site.

  • Admin registration of new users: The admin or site manager can now register new users directly from the 'Manage Users' interface, using an efficient process that does not require the admin to log out.

  • Password control: Added ability to specify a minimum password length, so that three different levels of password checking are now supported.

  • Page 'redirects' and navigation image rollovers: Page (sub-page) links can be displayed as rollover images in the left-hand nav bar of a page, and can be configured to redirect the user to a specified URL instead of displaying sub-page content.

  • Gizmo 'Invitations': for some of the site content, including polls and discussions, it is now possible to send out targeted announcements about the object to a defined subset of site users.

  • User-configurable login splash page: The 'login required' mode, toggled from the admin's system config page, now allows the admin to configure the look of the login 'splash page', which a user will see when they first reach the site and have not logged in yet.

  • Notification on profile change: Users are emailed an acknowledgment if their profile information changes. This is done regardless of whether they or an admin has changed the profile. If their email information changes, the acknowledgment is mailed to both old and new addresses.

  • Ability to email or generate printer-friendly display of a page: At the bottom of each page are small icons which allow the page contents to be emailed, or a printer-friendly version of the page to be displayed.

New Gizmos

Gizmos are the content building blocks that can be added to Metadot Portal pages. A number of new Gizmos have been developed since the last open-source release:

  • Page Section:This gizmo allows "content block" objects, with optional headings, to be added to a page, where the Page Sections can themselves include other gizmos as well as HTML. The gizmos contained within a Page Section can be ordered within their group, and moved as a group amongst the other gizmos on the page.

  • Calendar: This gizmo provides calendar functionality. Events and appointments can be posted and shared.

  • Task List: Allows users to manage tasks. One can use a Task List to organize and manage tasks according to priority, due date, status, or assignment. Tasks can also be added to the Quick Events view of a Calendar.

  • FAQ : Allows users to build FAQ pages in the form of a series of questions and answers, plus an automatically-generated linked index to the questions at the top of the page.

  • Contact us page: Allows users to create a page with company contact information.

  • Site Map:displays a site map from a configurable starting point to a given depth.

Other enhancements:

  • Additional GizmoTags, to support a wider range of site content embeddable in templates. Improvements in efficiency and flexibility of template processing.

  • The site admin can toggle whether or not the site's dynamically-generated URLs use the prefix 'http' or 'https'. Thus, a site can easily be switched to use SSL.

  • A site admin can toggle whether or not a login is required to see site content.

  • The "Styles and Colors" admin page now allows templates or style sheets to optionally be uploaded if the admin prefers, in addition to cut-and-pasted.

  • The 'Web Builder' bar has been improved; and the addition of new subpages is supported directly by an easily-accessible button. The term 'Category' as been replaced by 'Page'.

  • The Metadot Portal version number is now generated in the HTML comments for each page.

  • When new gizmos are created, they are added to the end of the existing list, and up and down arrows for gizmos now 'wrap'.

  • The event log table's purge interval can now be set directly from the admin's system config page, rather than requiring a change to the server-side cleaning script.

  • Added ability to delete from the Clipboard in addition to pasting from it.

  • New flexible category indents mode: Left nav bar can now be optionally expanded. In Style 4, they can be expanded an arbitrary number of levels using the md_v_subnav_flex GizmoTag. In Style 1, the left nav bar can be optionally expanded one level deep.

  • From the Manage Users page, the admin can see the list of users who are currently online. Also added admin option to suppress 'who is online' feature.

  • Size of 'description' fields for Pages (Categories) and other gizmos has been increased.

  • Added an option in the Table creation form to suppress the table name when shown in a Page.

  • Improved default template layout.

  • Changed storage and bandwidth quota units to megabytes (MB).

  • Channel-editing functionality has been extended to allow owners of original internal source information certain channel editing privilege.

  • Don't include channel in list if user does not have permissions to view source object.

  • In the description fields for most gizmos, the user now has the ability to toggle between text or HTML modes. In HTML mode, the content of the field is rendered as HTML. In text mode, text is displayed exactly as typed.

  • A site may now be operated in either 'trusted' or 'non-trusted' mode. The default is 'non-trusted'. If the site is running in 'non-trusted' mode, then info about users' email addresses is not exposed to non-admins for example when sending invitations and creating groups. In addition, a non-admin cannot search the site's users using only a wildcard expression. ('*') -- the search must be more constrained. If the site is running in 'trusted' mode, then users will be able to see emails of other users, and can generate a list of all users.

  • Gizmos can now support javascript validation in their 'create' forms: problems with missing fields are detected on the client side, and 'focus' placed at the first form field with missing information.

  • The gizmo pull-down "Add" menu is now sorted by gizmo name.

  • Gizmos now all have an associated version number, which may be updated by the gizmo developer as improvements are made. The admin may now view all gizmo version numbers via the admin config pages.

  • Login as well as session expiration now causes the user id to be removed from cookie.

  • A site admin can set site home and 'after-login' pages for the site. These can replace the default 'front page' for the site.

  • Links panel, and breadcrumb trail & edit panel now wrap more gracefully if window is too narrow.
